Call them boats or yachts, these are mega machines on the waterways. Yatzer gets deep into the Frauscher family of watercrafts and for good reason!  ”Engelbert Frauscher quickly gained an excellent reputation and in the 1930s crafted O-Yawls for the Olympic Games. Nevertheless, war broke through and things froze for a while to restart in 1945 in Gmunden, where tradition went on and on.  In the...

A "curtain" that can be shaped into any form. Similar to Hanna Allijn's Faceted Curtains, these add the power of magnets to create a sturdier and more permanent sculptural shape as you push and pull the fabric. Florian Krautli's website lists the Magnetic Curtain as a future offering of Dutch design collective, Droog. We will wait and see if it makes into production...

I love this concept. According to the designer, Tokujin Yoshioka, it is "a Natural Crystal Chair". First he makes a substrate made of polyester elastomer, then forms the skeleton, which is then submerged in a tank. From here, the crystals grow on the substrate in a completely random and natural way. Its a great juxtapozition of man's control and natures unending creativity.

Furniture is definitely one of my favourite disciplines of design. Particularly contemporary wood furniture that is constructed using very traditional carpentry techniques. Samuel Moyer's work is made entirely from reclaimed and surplus timber. No screws, no nails, no metal.  The asymmetry and imperfection of the recycled wood makes each piece unique. The asymmetry and imperfection of the recycled...

There was once a steel-decked river barge, decommissioned and idle in Morgan City, Louisiana. Lonely and unused, it was purchased by the Neptune Foundation, a not-for-profit that constructs movable waterfront pools for recreationally underserved communities. The foundation commissioned Jonathan Kirschenfeld Associates to have at it; and one Hurricane Katrina and about two years of work later, the...
